JOHN EDWARD "JAKE" STEINER On Christmas Day, December 25, 2012, of Edgewood. He was born on May 22, 1925, son of the late Helen and Clarence M. Steiner and brother of the late Clarence M. Steiner. Jake was a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, attended Central Catholic High School and served with the Coast Guard in WWII, from 1943-45. He attended Carnegie Institute of Technology and graduated In 1950 with an engineering degree. Jake worked for 27 years at U.S. Steel as a metallurgical specialist in heaving forgings. After early retirement, he formed Engineering Materials and Processing INC., a steel consulting firm. This business took him and his wife, Louise to Japan, Italy, Brazil, Australia, Germany, China, France, and Great Britain. While an accomplished engineer, he loved projects, from helping his children with home additions, to real estate ventures, and loft developments in Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Survived by Louise Opie Steiner; and children, Elizabeth Milligan, Boston, John, Jr. and Ilene of Chicago, Carolyn and Chris Malumphy of Cleveland, Casey and Rosemary of Pittsburgh, and Mary Ann Steiner, Pittsburgh; and eight grandchildren, Meagan, Lily, Paige, Emily, Robin, Ben, Connor, and Audrey. Let me draw you a picture...He turned everything into a celebration, with his wife Louise, he hosted parties for family, friends and neighbors, the wine crush, train and music parties. With a combination of sternness and love for learning he supported music lessons, language learning, academics and travel. An indulgent grandpa, he served ice cream on waffles. He lived his life fully, traveled widely and loved his family deeply and extended that support to all around him. He died peacefully at home, in front of the hearth, surrounded by family on Christmas Day. Visitation Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at THOMAS L. NIED'S FUNERAL HOME, in Swissvale, 7441 Washington Street, 15218, (412) 271-0345. In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to Salvation Army, 700 N. Bell Ave., Carnegie, PA 15106, (412) 466-1500, or a charity of your choice.
